Typically, people use the phrase “Rome wasn’t built in a day” to remind others that time is required to create something truly great. Now, what does this have to do with the Design Automation Conference? While it might seem like we held the 57th DAC just a few weeks ago, time doesn’t stand still. In fact, the 58th DAC team began laying bricks for next year’s event by holding its first kickoff meeting only three weeks after completing this year’s virtual event. And for the 58th DAC, I am truly honored to serve as General Chair. This is a big pair of shoes to fill when you consider the amazing 57 chairs who served before me.
One of the most important tasks as General Chair is the process of selecting members of the executive committee. The executive team consists of a core group of volunteers who spend an entire year architecting every aspect of what we recognize today as the premier event for the design and automation of electronic circuits and systems. And this year I would like to highlight a few new members on 58th DAC team.
First is Iris Bahar from Brown University who will serve as Panel Chair. Iris was the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Marie R. Pistilli Women in Electronic Design Award, and she will bring a wealth of conference experience to our team. Next is Monica Farkash from AMD who will serve as the Designer Track Co-Chair. I am excited to bring Monica to the team with her depth of experience blending academia and industry. Also new this year is Mark Kraeling from GE Transportation who will serve as Embedded Systems Chair. In keeping with DAC’s slogan, “From Chips to Systems—Learn Today, Create Tomorrow,” Embedded Systems is one of our hottest topic areas, and Mark’s expertise will be key to driving this growth. Next, I have added Shouyi Yin from Tsinghua University as this year’s Asia Outreach Chair. Participation from Asia has become DAC’s fastest growing region, and I look forward to working with Shouyi over the next year to continue this trend. And finally, with all the recent growth in AI, which crosses all topic areas, we have decided to add an AI Chair to the executive committee. I am excited to announce that Yu Wang from Tsinghua University has accepted this role.
In addition, there are several 57th DAC executive committee members returning this year, who will bring essential experience and expertise to the team. So, while “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” I can’t think of a better team to build a great program and vibrant exhibit floor in the coming months.
